5 Common Track Lighting Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)

Track lighting is incredibly versatile, but it is easy to make mistakes that compromise both aesthetics and functionality. Here are the five most common errors we see in the field and how to avoid them.

1. Insufficient Track Planning

Many projects fail because the track layout was not planned with the final lighting design in mind. Always plan your track runs before ceiling installation to ensure optimal fixture placement.

2. Wrong Fixture Spacing

Fixtures placed too close together create hotspots, while spacing that is too wide leaves dark areas. A general guideline is 2-3 times the mounting height for spacing between fixtures.

3. Ignoring Glare Control

Direct glare can make spaces uncomfortable. Use deep-set reflectors, honeycomb louvers, or adjustable glare shields to control direct light spill.

4. Overloading the Track

Each track circuit has a maximum wattage rating. Exceeding this can cause flickering or circuit failure. Always calculate total load before finalizing the design.

5. Poor Color Temperature Matching

Mixing different CCT fixtures on the same track creates visual inconsistency. Always specify and verify color temperature across all fixtures in a single zone.
